Stay in your own lane

It is an understatement to say that the pandemic has challenged us all in many ways. These are truly unique times. And very heated (and I’m not just talking about the weather!). Things that have nothing to do with politics have become incredibly politicized. I find myself getting more and more frustrated and angry at certain people’s comments. I consider myself to be pretty open-minded, but the ignorance just infuriates me.

So I have to remind myself to stay in my own lane.

“Girl, just do you.”

Stay on my own mat, in yoga terms.

“Remember to breathe.”

Don’t worry about what other people think or get caught up in the stories they tell themselves.

But it’s still hard. Some of those comments hurt. Our county just unveiled what the virtual schedule will look like in the Fall and some parents are upset and saying some pretty nasty things. I get it. You don’t like the situation we are in. None of us do. But to tell us to suck it up, put on a mask, go into school and do our job? (as if we aren’t doing our jobs!) And then get upset when you see what the reality of social distancing looks like in schools? Really?!?!

ARGH!!!

And there are comments within school that are hurtful. Being a specialist teacher (Art, Music, PE, Library, etc.) has its challenges, too. The reality is, sometimes we are treated “lesser than” classroom teachers and there is a definite hierarchy felt in the cultural vibe at school. I hate to say it, but it’s true. We often get the short end of the stick and are merely seen as classroom teachers’ planning period. You thought it was bad feeling like a babysitter by parents and employers? Imagine what it feels like for us when we get it from all sides!

Again, ARGH!!!

So I have to remind myself: stay in your own lane.

Do your job and stay in your own lane.

Worry about you and how you can make a difference. People are going to think what they are going to think and often there is little you can do to change that.

Focus on you, focus on the positive, and do the best you can do.

And have some wine on those really frustrating days when you want to punch people in the face.

Definitely don’t do that latter.

LOL.

We will get through this.

Do what makes you happy.
