Motivation is garbage

Wait. What?

Have you ever heard yourself say/think: “I’ll do it when I feel like it. I’ll do it when I feel motivated. I’m not motivated to do it, so it probably means I shouldn’t do it. I don’t feel ready.”

We’ve all been there on some level, right? I know I have. And where has that gotten us? Nowhere. Well, certainly not doing the thing we think we should be “motivated” to do.

“Motivation is garbage.”

~Mel Robbins

I had to sit with that one for a bit. And the longer I did, the more it made sense.

We don’t “feel” like waking up when the alarm goes off. We don’t “feel” like getting up and working out. We don’t “feel” like making the phone call we should make.

We need to stop waiting to “feel” ready and motivated and just DO IT. Because there will always be that slight hesitancy. Your brain wants to do the thing that feels the most comfortable. It doesn’t want to go into the unknown (scary!). Or do something different. Or CHANGE.

Here’s the thing: we will never “feel” motivated. You just have to get up and move and do it. There is no beating around the bush on that. (side note: I didn’t “feel” like writing a blog post but I challenged myself to write one a week. So here I am. LOL)

When we were kids we had our parents to tell us to do the thing we didn’t “feel” like doing but needed to get done (“clean your room, make your bed, finish your homework, eat your vegetables”, etc.). Well, guess what? Now it’s just you. YOU are your own parent. YOU are your own boss. YOU are the adult.

So if you want to do that thing, meet your goals, work towards your dreams, you can’t wait around until you “feel” like it, until you are motivated. Because that day may never happen. 5-4-3-2-1 … GO! your way to it and MAKE IT HAPPEN. You got this. And listen to this podcast. And check out this video. Mel Robbins is amazing.

Do what makes you happy.
