Mom life workout update: starting off 2023 right

Quote

Because this blog is called “IronYogini”, I feel like I want to have a post here and there about what I’m up to fitness-wise. In the past it was all about my training and race reports. Road races, triathlons, Spartan races, figure competitions, etc. There will be more of that, don’t worry. But for now, it’s more about the mom life and what I do to keep up with an ever growing and continuously active toddler.

At the moment we are still in the pre- (unassisted) walking phase. He took his first steps last week (woohoo!) but is very much in the step-step-fall, step-step-fall phase. Lots of carrying, lots of holding, lots of bending over to hold his hands as he walks. Oof!

My focus is on building strength, power, and mobility. In as little time as possible. LOL. I managed to complete a year of nearly daily yoga through Yoga with Adriene and her free YouTube videos. I love her and her energy (and Benji!). It has become very much a part of my morning routine and helps me check in with my body to see where I’m at on any given day. I use her videos to work on mindfulness, focus on my breath leading the movement, along with flexibility and balance.

Lindsey Bomgren’s Nourish Move Love channel is my go-to for strength and mobility training. She is a mom of three littles and totally gets in my head in terms of what I need to hear to keep me going. Right now my motivation is my son. To stay strong for him, to keep up with him. Yes, I’m an “older” mom, but I don’t want to start feeling any of the creakiness quite yet! So I aim for 4-5 days a week of strength training, 25 mins tops. I am still squeezing this in during nap time but want to get to a point where I can have my son watch me workout, too.

And tap dancing. Tap dancing is my new love. I just started consistently tapping about three months ago. I am still very much a beginner so tapping isn’t quite at “workout” level for me yet (though my calves get a good workout!). But I am using my brain in a different way. Learning a new skill. Working on coordination and balance. Memorizing choreography. Learning one sequence on the right and then having to transfer it to the left. Moving to music. I love it. I am a member of Carrie Mitchell’s Happy Tappers Club which is an incredible resource of tap dancing classes and tutorials on specific moves.

So, that’s what I do.

20-30 mins of Yoga with Adriene every day.

20-25 mins of strength training with Nourish Move Love videos 4-5 days a week.

20-25 mins of tap dancing with Carrie Mitchel and her Happy Tappers Club 4-5 days a week.

Next I want to add a few days a week of daily walking. Baby steps.
