I try my best to walk my talk. On the outside, I think I pull it off pretty well. But let’s be real—I’m human. I have my moments. The things I know I shouldn’t eat, the broken promises to myself, those things I know I could be better at. Still, for the most part, I genuinely strive to practice what I preach.
As a trainer at Burn Boot Camp, one of our go-to mantras is: “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”
We say this a lot. Usually while encouraging members to lean into discomfort, pick up the heavier dumbbells, or crank out just five more unbroken reps. Push past the limits. Get a little uncomfortable. You know the drill.
So… I did a thing.
I signed up for The Athlete Games—a competition specifically for Burn trainers. Three tough workouts. Specific weights. Strict standards. Complete them for time. No shortcuts, no fluff.
Here’s the kicker: I can’t do them yet. Not at the prescribed weights. Not cleanly. Not fully. But I can finish them. Sort of.
And even though the competition isn’t until August, and the registration deadline is creeping up fast, I finally bit the bullet and signed up. Why? Because if I’m telling my members to do hard things, to take the leap, to chase the challenge—then I’ve got to do the same. I’ve got to walk that talk… even if I’m limping a little right now.
It’s been a long time since I’ve had a physical goal like this. A race, a competition, a deadline that scares me a bit. Not since before my son was born. (And he’s almost four—so yeah, it’s been a minute.)
But here we go. I’m stepping up. Out of my comfort zone. Into the challenge. I’m not ready—yet—but I’m showing up anyway. And honestly, that feels like a win already.
So as yourself, what would it look like for you to step out of your comfort zone? Where could you lean in, get uncomfortable, and trust that the work will get you where you want to go?
“You don’t have to be ready. You just have to be willing.”
Let’s go do hard things.
