Laziness – it’s a word that’s often thrown around with a hint of disdain, isn’t it? I was listening to a podcast the other day that questioned whether laziness even exists. Definitely some food for thought which got me thinking: perhaps our eagerness to label others as lazy is just a sneaky little trick we play on ourselves to feel better about our own hustle. Ever caught yourself comparing your busyness to someone else’s? Moms are especially guilty of this, aren’t they? We’ve all been there, listing off our kids’ activities like a badge of honor, secretly hoping to outdo each other in the busyness Olympics.
But here’s the thing – our worth isn’t tied to our productivity. It’s not measured by how much we cram into a day or how many tasks we tick off a list. Yet, somehow, we’ve convinced ourselves that if we just keep going, if we keep pushing, we’ll finally prove our worthiness to the world. Oof. Didn’t know I was going to go that deep today. LOL.
Enter the art of rest – that elusive creature we often mistake for laziness. Whether your idea of rest involves diving into a good book or diving into a Netflix binge, it’s time to call out the myth of laziness for what it is: BS. We all need rest, in whatever form it takes for us. So the next time you see someone lounging on the couch while your to-do list screams for attention, resist the urge to judge. Give yourself – and them – the grace to rest.
After all, the to-do list will still be there tomorrow. There will always be more tasks waiting to be tackled. It’s a never-ending cycle. So why not embrace the philosophy of “good enough” and allow yourself the luxury of rest? Because, my friend, you deserve it.
“Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
~Maya Angelou
Get that rest.
