There’s a saying my son repeats with certainty every week at story time:
Be the tide that lifts all boats. Be the lighthouse in the storm. Be the candle in the darkness. And most important of all, BE YOU.
It always amazes me how effortlessly he recites it. And honestly? It sticks with me, too.
Today, we saw yet another example of the tension and division that seem to dominate our world. A high-stakes meeting in the Oval Office between the President of Ukraine and the current administration turned tense—words were exchanged, the energy was heavy, and kindness was nowhere to be found. It was uncomfortable (and appalling) to witness, and yet, completely out of our control.
And isn’t that how so much of life feels right now? Uncertain. Chaotic. Bigger than us.
But here’s the thing: small ripples create waves.
We may not have the power to control global politics, but we do have the power to control how we treat the people around us. A kind word. A genuine smile. A simple “I see you.” These may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but they aren’t. These tiny moments of connection add up to something powerful. They remind people they are valued, that they matter. And isn’t that what we all need?
So, even in the midst of life’s bigness and uncertainty, ask yourself: What small difference can I make today?
Hold the door open. Offer a compliment. Listen—really listen—to someone who needs to be heard.
Because when we show up for others, we create a world where kindness ripples outward. And that? That’s the kind of change that lasts.
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt
Now go out there and be the tide. Be the lighthouse. Be the candle. And most importantly—be you.
