Construction happens

The weather is getting nicer and I’m excited to do more walks and hiking with my son. I had grand plans today to try out a hiking backpack so we can do more hiking as a family. But then we noticed orange cones going up in front of our sidewalk. And then suddenly a Bobcat appeared. And then a dump truck. And other construction equipment. And construction hats. And lots of noise. And that was the end of that. No going to the park. No meandering in the woods. Because watching construction was way more interesting than getting in the car and driving somewhere.

Motherhood has taught me a lot of things, but the biggest lesson has been that I just have to go with the flow of my day. I can have great plans, but things will dictate differently sometimes. Whether it’s a kid who is skipping naps, or not feeling great, or in this case construction in front of the house. [on a side note: teaching elementary music has also taught me to be extremely adaptable, so this was not a huge life change for me. LOL.]

We were not in any dire situation where we couldn’t get out of our driveway. If I wanted to, we could have still stuck to my original plan. But I am also learning to embrace simplicity. Like the simplicity of watching construction. For three hours. When was the last time I did that? Uhhhh … NEVER. And I really enjoyed watching the process. A kid is a great excuse to get a lawn chair out and just sit in your driveway. If it were just me, that be quite a strange sight.

And he loved it. He was squealing with joy and pointing and babbling. Constant entertainment. We actually have a really great board book about road work, which is one of his favorites.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned. Even a simple thing as going out for a hike. But we just go with the flow and embrace whatever is in front of us. What is som thing you can embrace today? Maybe something that wasn’t in your original plan?

Do what makes you happy.
