Circuit breaker: flipping your own switch to shift your mood

Quote about shifting mood

Do you ever find yourself stuck in a particular mood? Maybe a mood you would rather not be in? It’s hard to get unstuck sometimes. Emotions take over and it can feel incredibly overwhelming. Or there is a part of you that just wants to stay in that place for a bit. I just want to be grumpy for awhile or sulk a bit longer or continue to be angry at that person because they did me wrong!!!! ARGH!!!!

We are emotional beings so we are bound to get stuck in a bit of an emotional rut sometimes. It can feel silly or irrational to want to stay there because we don’t actually like feeling this way. But it is what it is. We are imperfect emotional beings.

So how do we get out of it? Well, one way is to have a “circuit breaker.” Merriam-Webster’s definition is: a switch that automatically interrupts the current of an overloaded electric circuit.

What if we had a switch that could interrupt this overloaded current of (charged) emotion?

This looks different for everyone. For some it could be as simple as pausing to take 5 deep breaths. Or dancing. Or listening to your favorite song. Or moving. Going out for a run. Lifting weights. Watching funny cat videos on YouTube. Calling your BFF.

What can get you out of your funk quickly? For me it’s pausing and breathing. Sometimes it’s shaking my body like crazy or punching a pillow (depending on the emotion). Or simply going outside and getting some fresh air.

“Happiness is an inside job.”

~William Arthur Ward

It’s up to you to shift your mood. Honor your feelings and then flip the switch. Flip your circuit breaker.

Do what makes you happy.
