See-sawing between work and play: the ultimate balancing act

Quote about rest and movement

Should I do something productive or something relaxing? Should I get that thing that must get done DONE or chill with a good book?

Ugh. The questions that torment me on a daily basis when I have pockets of free time to myself (i.e. my son’s nap times).

Ultimately, the answer is: both. I want to do both. I can do both. I can do each for just a few minutes and still feel relatively good about my choice.

Yet.

Yet somehow I feel a little bit torn. A little bit unsettled. This is more a recent feeling. It feels like there is some universal vibe going on (maybe something astrological, too?) because I feel like I am tapping into a subconscious unrest, an undercurrent of anxiety that is lingering in the background. Anyone else? No? Ha. It could just be me. Which is most likely. LOL. Whatever it is, it feels unnerving and I am doing my best to embrace it.

And . . . Breathe.

Both is still my answer. It feels good to do something productive and then rest. My life is the constant see-sawing between the two. Let me clean and then read. Let me return those emails and then tap dance. Let me mow the lawn and then chill with a YouTube video. Let me read that “productive” bit of nonfiction and then read my murder mystery.

Is it balanced? Pshaw. Nope. But it feels right in the moment. And it’s something that is working for me. At least for now.

“Life is a balance between rest and movement.”

What ratio of work and rest is working for you right now? Does it need any adjustments? “Find what feels good” as Adriene (from Yoga with Adriene) says.

Do what makes you happy.
